Do Heated Jackets Actually Work? An Honest UK Guide

SnapWarm heated jacket in black, front and back, showing 8 glowing heat zones

Short answer: yes, heated jackets work, but not the way a thick winter coat does. They put a small amount of heat right where you lose it, usually across the chest, back and neck. That makes them great for standing still in the cold and less useful in heavy rain or as your only layer in deep cold.

The quick version

  • A heated jacket warms you with thin carbon-fibre panels powered by a small battery.
  • Most models heat up within seconds and have 3 heat levels.
  • They suit people who stand or sit still in the cold: bus stops, dog walks, the touchline, outdoor jobs.
  • Battery size decides how long the heat lasts. Low settings last far longer than high.
  • Check three things before you buy: whether a power bank is included, how it washes and how the sizing runs.

How a heated jacket actually works

Thin heating panels are sewn into the lining and connected to a USB cable inside a pocket. Plug in a power bank, press the button on the chest and the panels warm up. There is no water or flame, and the panels are flat enough that the jacket still looks and feels like a normal puffer.

A normal coat only traps the heat your body makes. That is why you can feel fine on a brisk walk and freezing five minutes after you stop. A heated jacket adds heat of its own, so it keeps working when you are not moving.

When they are worth it, and when they are not

Situation Worth it? Why
Waiting for the bus or train Yes You are standing still, which is when a normal coat stops being enough
Walking the dog, school run Yes Use low on the way and turn it up if you stop
Watching football, outdoor events Yes Hours of standing still, the best case for added heat
Outdoor work Often Check it fits under your work gear and lasts your shift
Running or hard exercise No You make enough heat of your own and will overheat
Heavy rain Add a shell Many are not fully waterproof, so wear a waterproof layer on top

How long does the battery last?

It depends on the power bank and the heat level. As a guide, our SnapWarm jacket is rated for up to 8 to 12 hours on low with a 10,000mAh power bank. Expect much less on high, because the higher the heat, the faster the battery drains. If you use high all the time, choose a larger power bank or carry a spare.

What to check before you buy

Is a power bank included?

Many jackets, including ours, do not include one. That keeps the price down, and any standard 5V USB power bank works, so you may already own one. If you do not, add around £20 to your budget.

Can you wash it?

Most can be washed once the power bank is removed. Follow the care label and use a gentle cycle.

How does the sizing run?

Heated jackets often come up small, because the panels need to sit close to your body. Read the size chart in centimetres and check the recommendation. Ours runs small, so we suggest going one size up.

Where are the heat zones?

More zones means heat in more places. Look for the collar and upper back, because cold air on the neck is what most people notice first.

Are heated jackets safe?

They run on low-voltage USB power, the same type of power bank you use for your phone. Use a good-quality power bank, take it out before washing and do not leave the jacket on high against bare skin for long periods. If you have a medical implant or reduced feeling in your skin, ask your doctor first.

Is it worth buying one?

If you spend time standing still in the cold, or you are always the cold one, yes. If you are mostly moving, or only outside for a few minutes at a time, a good normal coat will do the job for less.

Where SnapWarm fits

The SnapWarm Heated Jacket has 8 heat zones, 3 heat levels on one button and a detachable hood. It runs on any standard 5V USB power bank, which is not included. If you need one, our 10,000mAh Power Pack is made for it, though it ships separately and takes longer to arrive. Delivery in the UK is free and usually takes 7 to 12 working days, with 30 days to return it.

FAQ

Do heated jackets really keep you warm?

Yes. They add heat rather than only trapping it, so they work best when you are standing or sitting still in the cold.

How hot do they get?

It varies by model. Our jacket is rated up to 45°C on its highest setting.

Can you wear one in the rain?

Light rain is usually fine, but for heavy rain wear a waterproof layer on top and keep the power bank dry.

Do they need a special battery?

Not always. USB models like ours work with any standard 5V power bank. Some brands use their own battery, which costs more to replace.

Can you wash a heated jacket?

Most can be washed after you remove the power bank. Always follow the care label.
